What Instructors are Saying
I found access to CourseSmart etextbook a valuable and time saving experience... I think Course Smart is a required resource now that I know it is possible to have.
I teach at several different locations, so I have access to CourseSmart wherever I am.
With CourseSmart I don't have to wait weeks to receive a review copy. Furthermore, I can use the search feature to quickly see whether or not the text adequately covers the material that is of the most interest to me. Therefore, convenience is most appealing.
The online review copies are available very quickly (usually a couple of days).
CourseSmart is an environmentally sensitive way to review numerous text books.
CourseSmart saves trees and gas...what more can I say? It also provides me the opportunity to review books I wouldn't have normally looked at because it is reasonably easy to do so.
This option provides faster review of the material without the need of having a hard copy on hand. It is also more environmentally friendly.
CourseSmart is a good way of reducing the cost of buying the textbooks.
We need to change how we do things to stop the degradation of the environment. This is a good example because it is also more convenient and effective than the alternative.
I think the most important thing is the ability to shoehorn text evaluation in any free time. Having an electronic version means I can access it anywhere and anytime that I am free. This really is a time saver and makes me more likely to consider a text.
The ease of going through the e-text saves me time and allows me to more quickly reference areas I may not be as familiar with, thus making me a more effective educator.
CourseSmart is an excellent electronic resource that enables an instructor to prepare and present the course very effectively and efficiently to students.
For me - the ability to answer student emails and reference a page number wherever I am is important to me.
Simply - an easier way to do things. You can have all your books in one place, online - without having to store things - and if coursesmart is available for all books across all colleges (hypothetically, one day) - how great would it be to be able to look at Myers for one college, King for another one and Zimbardo for a third - instantaneously on demand?
This is primarily about education in an online environment. Efficiency is key and the use of slow paper bound tools is a major problem.
Many students don't want to buy a textbook and keep it so it cuts down on printing and paper if they can buy an e-book subscription instead.
It's much quicker and less wasteful (environmentally) to examine textbooks online.
I don't have to wait for the texts to be delivered. They are there when needed on demand, even if I am away from my office.
It is much better to do all this on line -- rather than have publishers send me many many many hard copy texts which go to waste.
Saves a lot of trees, for one... and its more convenient compared to carrying a heavy textbook around.
I love books, but the ability to see elements of books without having them sent to me is better for the environment as well as more efficient.
It's the trend of the future. Students are more in tune with electronic sources for information and entertainment, so this matches the way they prefer to process information.
I am all for saving trees. This fits the way of the future to not print everything.
I have talked to other professors about CourseSmart. I consider it an incredible tool... It gives the students the choice of online or hardback and gives learning back to the student.
If my students are having a problem with a section of the book and they email me...if I have access to Wi-Fi, I can look at the book and answer the student immediately... I don't have to carry the book with me at all times.
CourseSmart is an excellent tool....Very easy to browse and available 24/7....I could do it whenever I had free time without carrying the book with me, or worrying if I had everything I needed to evaluate a textbook. It was a great experience.
I can review texts right away with CourseSmart (which is good especially when the adoption deadline is looming!).
I would never go back to paper textbooks after my experience with coursesmart. It is invaluable to be able to bring up the textbook on the screen and guide students through the chapter, telling them how to read it and what is important or what is missing.
Instead of being hit with numerous unsolicited textbooks, I can evaluate what I am interested in without all of the waste of a published version....I also like that I am able to evaluate eTexts from numerous publishers without having to go each individual website to request a copy-- much more convenient.
I am a biologist, so anything that causes fewer paper products to be wasted is valuable to me.
Very valuable as an online resource for online classes. I do not need the textbook to answer students' questions and look up assignments. I can do this from any location without the necessity of carrying the text.
I teach 3 courses and have very little time to fumble around looking up information to give feedback to my students. I like being able to search and/or quickly browse the online version rather than turning pages.
I find getting online to use the eTexts and the quick search feature allows me to maximize my already busy schedule. I get what I need and feel good about not wasting time hoping to come across what I need.
CourseSmart as a resource tool...is more efficient than lugging all the (potential) text books around for evaluation.
CourseSmart is a tool that allows you to compare entire texts electronically...it should be the first step in textook adoption for any class.
Students DEFINITELY should be given an opportunity to buy a coursesmart textbook!
Effective way to review a text... the ability to have access to an electronic copy on the go is invaluable.
A good way for students to have a textbook for half the price, be able to study in a virtual classroom, and not have to carry a 50 pound text around campus.
It's a slick way to take a quick look at a text, especially one you don't know much about.
CourseSmart is a great way to effectively compare and evaluate without having unnecessary large texts piling up -- allows for easier comparison of texts and materials and can be done anywhere at anytime.
The convenience is absolute. It doesn't matter where I am, if I have computer access, I have textbook access. I have used it with students to show them something when I bump into them in the library as well as source at home, in my office, etc.
There is no waste in previewing books -- I don't waste energy (i.e. gas) in sending the books back in a mail truck...I feel guilty throwing books away so I end up with overflowing bookshelves...
CourseSmart saves students money--that's a BIG deal for me.
CourseSmart helps me to discuss items in the book with my students visually as well as orally. I am able to draw their attention to what we are discussing.
I find it valuable to be able to take the book with me anywhere I go without having to carry around a very heavy, bulky hard copy.
Comparing textbook content in an online setting is clearly more effective than other methods I've tried.
Though I find having hardcopies in the office valuable, I don't have to haul the book(s) home with me every night or if I forget a book that I would have used, I can look up the information... and the search function gives me a tool that I do not have with a hardcopy.
CourseSmart allows me to gain access to the text without needing to carry a book with me. I am usually near a PC and can work in various locations without the hassle of carrying my library with me.
It is an invaluable search tool. When putting together a lecture or just looking for a reference, the material is easy to sift through and get what you are after.
This generation grew up with PC's and is more adept at their use. Most of them prefer this method of learning over traditional textbooks.
I loved that my publisher gave me access to the book incredibly quickly on CourseSmart and I didn't have to wait for the exam copy to arrive - I was asked to teach a course at the last minute and had to decide on a textbook almost immediately.
You can preview eTextbooks anywhere/anytime because you don't need the hard copies, just your laptop!
Usually, when deciding on a textbook I am under a tight timeline...If I don't have a desk copy of the course specific textbook from publishers at that point, their textbooks are not considered...
CourseSmart is really efficient for screening multiple textbooks for course adoption before asking for a selected few that meet our instructional criteria.
It is a very efficient way to evaluate textbooks and resources online... the virtual bookshelf allows me to look at texts immediately without spending time on searches for hardcover texts.
CourseSmart is also a convenient, costs-saving option for students...The use of e-tasks appears to reinforce students' use of the Internet in other educational tasks as well.
My textbooks are much easier to access online compared to trying to find where I last put down my printed copy. I use CourseSmart much more than I use a printed copy...
CourseSmart is efficient and effective...I often travel, and it may take several days before I'm able to retrieve snail mail/packages; thus, being able to view eTextbooks online is a wonderful option for me.
Having an online resource allows me access to book information without dragging the book around with me all the time. I have found it to be very convenient.
CourseSmart will most likely be the way that we evaluate texts and use texts to teach courses in the future.
CourseSmart allows for electronic, and thus more efficient and quicker navigation of the text.
CourseSmart is an excellent resource for making textbook decisions that is environmentally responsible and provides access to all that one needs to make an informed choice about a textbook...Importantly, one can have access to the texts more quickly as well.
CourseSmart provides a fast, efficient way for a faculty member to review a wider selection of potential textbooks. I feel my use of CourseSmart will have a positive impact on the quality and "fit" of texts that I select for my courses.
Course smart puts the books on the shelf that you reach without moving, carry without noticing the weight.
CourseSmart provides a first class seat to the final frontier of learning...enjoy the ride.
