1. What is CourseSmart's new mobile Web app?

The new CourseSmart app is a Web–based application that provides users access to their CourseSmart eTextbooks from a variety of mobile devices including the Kindle Fire (launched 11/14), and select Android™ OS–based devices.

2. How do I get access to the new mobile Web app?

If you already have an active digital rental account:

  1. Sign in to your CourseSmart account
  2. Select the book you'd like to read from "My Bookshelf"
  3. Select the "Read Now" button
  4. If you accessing your eTextbook on a supported device, from a supported browser, you will be prompted to try the new mobile Web app

If you're new to CourseSmart and do not have an active digital rental account:

  1. Go to www.CourseSmart.com
  2. Select the "Create an Account" link in the upper right corner. Fill in the Account Information
  3. Next, check the "I Agree" box at the bottom left corner of the Web page, then select the "Continue" button
  4. Use "Search" or "Advanced Search" to find your eTextbooks
  5. Add your course materials to your Cart and checkout
  6. To read your digital course materials, go to "My Bookshelf" and select the book you'd like to read
  7. Select the "Read Now" button
  8. If you accessing your eTextbook on a supported device, from a supported browser, you will be prompted to try the new mobile Web app

NOTE: You may be asked to sign into your account again after selecting the "Try It" button from the on–screen prompt.

3. Why is CourseSmart offering this mobile Web app?

  7. Page Fidelity: Same page fidelity as found in print textbooks.

4. Which devices does the app work on?

Devices include: Kindle Fire and Android™ 3.0 OS or higher tablets. Support for other devices is coming soon.

5. Which browsers work best with the new app?

The app is optimized to best support multi–touch screens of today's most popular mobile devices. The app is supported by Amazon Silk and Google Chrome browsers on the mobile devices listed above in Question #4.

6. Where can I download the new app?

There is no app to download. On supported browsers, users will automatically be prompted to sign into the Web app when they start to read the eTextbooks they already have on their bookshelf. Refer to Question #2 above, "How do I get access to the new mobile Web app?" for accessing the new mobile app. Additionally, more details about the app may be found at www.coursesmart.com/go/mobile.

7. Can I read my Free Trial eTextbooks with the new app?

Free Trial eTextbooks are not available for viewing through the new Web app.

For Students: Only digital rentals with full access to all eTextbook pages will appear in your mobile bookshelf.

For Instructors: Only your active complementary online exam copies will appear in your mobile bookshelf.

8. How much does it cost to purchase the new app?

There is no cost to obtain access to the app. The app is Free!

9. What features are available when reading my eTextbook?

Search on topics, zoom a page, take and view notes.

9a. Text search

To search through the textbook, do the following:

9b. Zooming

To Zoom a page you can rotate your device into Landscape mode, and scroll the page from top to bottom. You can also use Pinch & Zoom within Landscape or Portrait mode. When you Zoom the page, you will go into Zoom/Pan mode. Swiping your finger slowly across the page will pan the image, it will not turn the page. To go to the next page, swipe the page quickly. Pinching the image back to regular size will cancel the Zoom and Pan mode.

NOTE: For the Kindle Fire, you may need to Pinch & Zoom within the Portrait mode to improve your viewing ability on the device's screen. An app version update will be coming soon to automatically resize the eTextbook page to fit your device's screen.

9c. Taking And Viewing Notes

You can use CourseSmart's mobile optimized Web app to add your own notes to an eTextbook. The notes you add to your CourseSmart eTextbook will be displayed and available for further annotations.

You can also delete a note on the Web app by selecting the trash can icon on the note. Clicking the "√" on the note will save the note, clicking the "X" on the note will cancel the note entry. Clicking off of the note anywhere else on the page will also save the note.

You can use the device to view Notes you have taken using your device, and you can add notes using the " " in the upper right corner of the notes viewing page.

9d. To add a Note

The counter in the upper right-hand corner below the plus sign tells you how many Notes are attached to that page. Touch counter to see them.

Touch on any one of the Notes to open it and make it editable. If you have Notes that cannot display in the height of the page, the Note will be scrollable up and down.

To see a list of all Notes in the eTextbook, touch the Notes symbol at the top right. A notes list will appear. Touching any of notes in the list, takes you to the page where the Note is attached. From this page you can open, read, edit or delete your Notes as described above.

10. How do I highlight text?

Highlighting and displaying highlights from your online eTextbook is currently not supported in this mobile application. However, future versions of the app may provide this feature.

11. Can I read my eTextbook offline with the new app?

No. An Internet connection is required to access eTextbooks and any notes that were created.

12. How do I navigate through an eTextbook with the app?

There are several ways to move around in an eTextbook using your app:

12a. Turning pages

Tap the left or right margin to view the previous or next page.

12b. Go to pages

To go to a specific page in the textbook, select the "Goto" field at the top right of the page and use the keyboard to enter the page number. The page number must be entered exactly as displayed in the book (for example, if Appendix pages are shown in the book as "A-1," do not use "a-1").

12c. Table of Contents

Touch the bulleted-list icon in the upper left-hand corner to display a dynamic Table of Contents. Touch the chapter or chapter section you want to go to.

12d. Text search

To search through the textbook, do the following:

  1. Touch the Table of Contents icon in the upper left–hand corner.
  2. Search is the first option in the Table of Contents. Select the area to the right of magnifying glass icon and type in the word or terms you are interested in.
  3. Touch the magnifying glass icon to search.
  4. From the list of Search results, select the page you want to go to.

13. Does CourseSmart's new mobile app comply with federal guidelines relating to ADA, 508 compliance?

CourseSmart's mobile application is generally inaccessible to blind or visually–impaired users. This application is also inaccessible to users who can only use keyboard controls. Current technical limitations prevent accessing the underlying text from being presented to users. VPATs for CourseSmart's mobile applications can be found on our Web site at http://www.coursesmart.com/go/accesshelp. CourseSmart will work towards an accessible version of the applications as technology progresses. CourseSmart's Web site is generally accessible to iPad/iPhone users using VoiceOver. Students using screen–reader technology should contact accessibility@coursesmart.com for more information.
