Student Guide to English Composition 101-102

This text is designed to reinforce the course goals for Composition 101 and 102. Opening sections provide information and material related to the composition program and to college-level writing. Information on paper assessment, plagiarism, and evaluation forms are included. Student essays are included throughout the text as the basis for developing the specific writing skills included for Composition 101 and 102. Composition 101 focuses on analytical skills that college students need to develop to respond appropriately to analytical and argument-based rhetoric. Rhetorical concepts such as audience, purpose, situation and voice will help inform analysis and synthesis of ideas. Composition 102 builds on the 101 skills and covers research steps to follow in order to compose a well-developed researched argumentative essay. Steps covered include selecting a topic, focusing the research process, articulating a thesis, and planning of the essay argument.
